Retirements on the Chopping Block
Across the country, state and city governments are using the excuse of budget deficits to cut funding for whatever they think they can get away with. After continuously cutting funds for education, social services, transportation, and housing, the latest item on their chopping block is public workers’ pensions. Politicians try to blame the budget shortfalls on the big price tags of these services when the real reason for the (...) -
Healthy Profits or Healthy Lives

Companies everywhere have started a new strategy to go after workers and make more money – Wellness Programs. Under these programs, companies punish workers if we don’t meet certain health requirements that the companies choose. Companies are setting limits on body weight, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, cigarette smoking, minimum exercise requirements and more. And if workers don’t meet the guidelines that the bosses pick, our health care costs can (...) -

USA : Whoever Wins in November – We Still Lose
27 October 2012, by Robert ParisUSA : Whoever Wins in November – We Still Lose
October 22nd, 2012
The elections are now just two weeks away. The candidates are making their final arguments, and soon we will be asked to choose – Obama and Biden or Romney and Ryan.
The Republican campaign has been clear – they aim to attack workers, immigrants, women, gay people, the environment, and to maintain the U.S. wars on the people of Iraq and Afghanistan.
Romney and Ryan say these things openly, with smiles on their faces. (...) -

1 August 2012, by Robert ParisCalifornia’s Budget – More Attacks on Workers and the Poor
The latest budget signed by Governor Brown is an outrage. The nearly $16 billion budget deficit has once again been paid for by huge cuts to workers and the poor.
For years, the state government, whether Democrats or Republicans, have been cutting taxes to corporations and the super rich while millions of workers have lost their jobs and had their homes reclaimed by banks. And so, as California brings in less revenue from (...) -
Poverty and the American two-party system
19 November 2012, by Robert ParisPoverty and the American two-party system
Nearly 50 million people are living in poverty in the United States. This was the dire news delivered eight days after the presidential election in a report from the US Census Bureau.
The new report’s findings—which factor in expenses and government-provided benefits, providing a more accurate picture of US poverty—are a damning indictment of American capitalism. Based on data from 2011, three full years into Obama’s first term, the report is (...) -

By Bill Van Auken
17 October 2012
The White House is considering launching drone strikes and Special Forces raids in retaliation for the fatal September 11 attacks on the US consulate and a CIA facility in Libya’s eastern city of Benghazi, the Associated Press reported Monday.
Pressure is building for the Obama administration to take military action before the presidential election in less than three weeks, as the Republicans (...)
