UAW provides Obama a platform for his austerity assault on workers
19 December 2012, by Robert ParisUAW provides Obama a platform for his austerity assault on workers
By Jerry White
President Obama gave a campaign-style speech at a suburban Detroit auto factory Monday afternoon, enlisting the support of the United Auto Workers union for his attack on basic social programs at the heart of the deficit-reduction deal he is negotiating with congressional Republicans.
Union officials standing behind the president and packing the audience served as extras in this latest stage-managed (...) -
Syria – Still in the Crosshairs of the U.S.
7 October 2013, by Robert ParisSyria – Still in the Crosshairs of the U.S.
Today Syria is being torn apart by a bloody civil war. Since 2001 the ruling regime of Bashar Al-Assad’s Ba’ath Party has faced an uprising that has threatened to overturn his rule. Since the beginning of the conflict, over 100,000 people have been killed in the fighting, and about 2 million or ten percent of Syria’s population have become refugees in surrounding countries.
In addition to the internal struggle, Syria has become a site of (...) -
Karl Marx and Frederick Engels Writings on the U.S. Civil War
17 January 2022, by Robert ParisKarl Marx and Frederick Engels Writings on the U.S. Civil War
Karl Marx,
The North American Civil War
London, October 20, 1861 For months the leading weekly and daily papers of the London press have been reiterating the same litany on the American Civil War. While they insult the free states of the North, they anxiously defend themselves against the suspicion of sympathising with the slave states of the South. In fact, they continually write two articles: one article, in which they (...) -
May Day – Made in the USA, Exported to the World
27 September 2012, by Robert ParisMay Day – Made in the USA, Exported to the World
One of the most important working-class holidays, May Day (International Workers Day), originated in the United States in the 1880s with the struggle for the eight-hour day.
The expansion of capitalism in 19th century America brought new layers of the working class into existence. Many were imbued with a strong class hatred for their oppressors. The workers’ movement spread from large urban centers to small towns, building new (...) -
The Right of Self-Determination and the Negro in the United States of North Americas

The Right of Self-Determination and the Negro in the United States of North Americas
(July 1939)
Source: SWP New York Convention Resolutions, 11 July 1939. Proofreading: Einde O’Callaghan (March 2016).
In 1930 Negroes in America constituted nearly twelve million, or 10 percent of the American population. Of these, two-thirds were still in the South, despite the war and postwar emigration to the North. In the cities of the North and East, the Negroes form only a small (...) -

“Roll Up Our Sleeves and Continue to Fight”
25 July 2013, by Robert Paris“Roll Up Our Sleeves and Continue to Fight”
The murder of Trayvon Martin, the six weeks it took to arrest and charge his killer, George Zimmerman, and now the not guilty verdict, together paint a disgusting picture of the violently racist society we live in.
For those of us who never sympathized with Zimmerman, who see our child in Trayvon, or ourselves or our brother or our friends – sadly, this verdict was not surprising. We may have been hoping for a conviction, and felt a little (...)
